Sugar addiction is a serious problem for US citizens. Hart.org says “Adults and young adults in the U.S. consume on average about 17 teaspoons of added sugar every day, more than 2 to 3 times the recommended daily allowance for men and women respectively. This adds up to around 60 pounds of added sugar consumed annually”.
Research says that 75% of Americans have a sugar addiction. Last year us citizens spent 48 billion dollars on chocolate and candy.
Sugar releases dopamine, a hormone that makes you happy, into your brain. This is especially dangerous because people can get addicted to that feeling of euphoria. Some studies have suggested that sugar is as addictive as cocaine. Just like cocaine, people can go through withdrawal.
Some of these withdrawal symptoms are Anxiety, fatigue, and mood changes. Going through withdrawal can also cause hyperactivity disorder also known as ADHD. All scientists have come to a conclusion that sugar should be reduced to a minimum for the safety of mental and physical health.
If you do have a sugar addiction you can add protein and fiber into your meals to help bring your blood sugar levels back to normal. If you believe that it is getting out of hand I recommend you reach out to a professional addiction counselor.
