There have been many cases of owners abandoning animals during hurricanes in order to evacuate themselves. This has led to many dangers for owners and their animals. One instance involved a Florida man tying his dog to a fence while evacuating Hurricane Milton.
Unfortunately in this circumstance, there could have been certain precautions taken to ensure the dog’s safety but instead, the dog was found tied to a post in dangerous rising flood waters. Fortunately, the dog made it and was saved by the Florida Highway Patrol on October 9.
The bodycam footage showed the dog next to a wire fence with the water reaching up to his chest. The owner explains that he abandoned his dog because he was leaving Florida and he couldn’t find anyone who could take care of the dog.
The owner was 23-year-old Aldama Garcia who could face up to 5 years in jail due to animal cruelty. Eventually, Garcia gave up ownership of the dog. Sadly this is not the only case of animals being left behind from the hurricane.
Hopefully, as we gain more insight into how to prepare and take precautionary measures in the future we will be able to find more places where animals can go during an emergency where the owner is not capable of taking care of their pets and animals.
