On Sunday February 11, 2024 the Kansas City Chiefs will take on the San Francisco 49ers in Superbowl LVIII. The game will take place in Las Vegas.
The first Super Bowl took place in 1967 after the two competing football leagues, the NFL and the AFL, negotiated a merger agreement in which they would formally come together and play a championship game at the end of each season. Today, the Super Bowl is the largest sporting event in America, and is watched by millions.
The Super Bowl has also always been significant to kids and teens over the years. While adults may be throwing parties, we have been a part of it all. Brody Bedford, a sophomore at All Saints’ Episcopal School said, “My parents have always invited people over to watch the game for as long as I can remember, and it is always a good time”. Super Bowl parties bring friends together to celebrate”, and this causes those friendships to grow even stronger. Creating memories together with friends and family is what life is about.
While it is a time to get together to celebrate, it can also be time for a little friendly competition depending on who you are rooting for. It always makes watching the game more fun and interesting if you throw in a little competition. Sometimes at Super Bowl parties there are games you can play with squares you can buy. At the end of each quarter if your square has the right numbers there is entry money in a pot that gets distributed. It can be fun and profitable. Another draw is that everyone loves the commercials.
There are always very funny and entertaining commercials during the game, and it has become one of the reasons to tune in. Kody Tanimoto, a senior at All Saints’, said, “The commercials are the best part of the event for sure”! At my parents’ house during the Super Bowl watch party we even vote every year to pick the best commercial. Another draw to the Super Bowl is the halftime performance. There have been controversies in the past over these halftime performances, so many tune in to see what might happen. This year the Super Bowl Halftime Show will feature Usher, Reba McEntire, Post Malone, and Andra Day. There may even be a surprise or two that we don’t know about yet. The recent Super Bowl Halftime shows have leaned into appealing to Generation X and Millennials with the musical lineup. But still, many younger people will be tuning in to watch.
This year there is a bonus to the Super Bowl making it popular amongst teenagers. Taylor Swift. Since Taylor Swift has been dating Travis Kelce, a player on the Chiefs, she is expected to be in attendance, and everyone is waiting to see if she makes it from her concert in Japan for the game. Many social media influencers have had fun doing the math on if she will make it.
While many don’t really care about what Taylor Swift is up to, it seems to be all many teenagers and women. Lily Bedford, a Senior at All Saints told me, “All of the girls will be tuned in this year to make sure Taylor makes the game”! This lets me know that maybe even more will be tuned in this year to watch Super Bowl 58. No matter why people in, we will be watching. The memories made from this Super Bowl will live on for a lifetime. We may not remember the score or care about Travis Kelce’s girlfriend, but we are living in moments that help shape who we are.
