For the Brits, held on December 26 is almost as important as Christmas Day. In the UK, the day after Christmas is called Boxing Day.
Boxing Day is linked to an old tradition where the servants of the wealthy families were allowed a day off on December 26th, to visit their own families, since they worked serving their masters on Christmas Day. The masters would give each servant a box to take home containing leftover food, gifts and sometimes money.
In modern times, Boxing Day is still a big holiday for the British, but is celebrated by families eating leftovers, playing games, shopping and going to sporting events like rugby, fox hunts and horse races. It is celebrated all across Great Britain and some Commonwealth countries like Australia, Canada and New Zealand.
So if you are in the UK or just spending the holiday with any Brits, remember Christmas celebrations aren’t really over until December 26, Boxing Day!
