26-year-old Luigi Mangione was an Ivy League graduate along with valedictorian of his all-boys private high school class. He grew up among a wealthy family who owned a great deal of real estate. This astonishing downfall has captured the eyes of many. This tragedy occurred on Dec. 4 at 6:40 am outside the Hilton Hotel where he allegedly shot 50-year-old CEO of UnitedHealthcare Brian Thompson. The next court date is set for February 21, The 26-year-old currently faces 11 counts in New York, one for first-degree murder and two for second-degree murder including other charges for weapon and forgery.
Many suspect the reasoning behind his act was due to the resentment he may have had toward the medical insurance company and took some inspiration from Ted Kaczynski who was a terrorist known as the Unabomber. This has sparked a dispute amongst people on whether he is in the wrong or not for what he did since UnitedHealthcare hasn’t had the best rep over the years. UnitedHealthcare has been known for misleading people into getting extra unnecessary health insurance products along with other fraud in the company. Though people are aware of what is going on with UnitedHealthcare, does it really justify taking another person’s life?
No matter what that CEO has done whether it’s fraud or other crimes. No that does not excuse murdering somebody just because they wronged you or other people. But that is just my take on the situation coming from someone who is not a fan of UnitedHealthcare just like many people. But many people over social media platforms are taking up for the 26-year-old. The first thing that comes to mind when all of this is occurring is, what does this say about UnitedHealthcare and how does this affect Americans in their daily life? Especially with the financial aspect.
But even with all the issues of UnitedHealthcare, this wouldn’t have any impact on Luigi since he never received any insurance from UnitedHealthcare in the first place. Could this incident possibly impact a change in Healthcare around the US and put a stop to the schemes or will Luigi Mangione be put behind bars?
