Pickleball is best described as a combination of badminton, ping-pong, and tennis. You can play indoors or outdoors on a badminton-sized court with a net similar to a tennis net. Players use paddles that resemble of ping-pong paddles but are bigger and usually made of more advanced materials.
The ball resembles a plastic whiffle ball with holes covering the surface. Pickleball can be played as singles or doubles, just like tennis. It is a game for all ages, shapes, and skill levels. The rules are simple enough for kids to pick up easily, and many people develop a passion for the sport after just a couple of games. Because of the smaller court size and light ball, the game is incredibly popular among seniors looking for a low-impact form of exercise.
It is a new upcoming sport that is a big trend right now, mainly for parents to do while the kids are away or for college students to go do a fun activity with some drinks, but now it is a big thing for families to do together. It also serves as a great bonding activity and gives the whole family exercise while doing something fun. My mom started when her friend and I wanted something to do together, now, she has gotten our whole family stuck on it, and it has been such a great opportunity to have created a strong bond between us.
When asked about other students whose families play pickleball, Lexie Brown, 27’, responds, “Pickleball brings my family together because it gives us something to do together that we all enjoy.” Allison Brackett, 27’ responds, “I play with my dad. I love being very competitive with him; it has created a special bond.” Cricket West 26’ responds, “ Overall, families at All Saints are getting stronger with this new sport.”
