In a great comeback for the sport, there is a new passion across the United States for high school and college wrestling including right here in Texas.
Texas, which once faced a decline in participation, is now recruiting wrestlers and making the sport a household name.
The surge for interest comes from wrestling heavy towns including San Antonio, Houston, and Corpus Christi just to name a few. The high schools and colleges with wrestling programs are finally starting to recognize the value that can come from these programs.
The growing interest in wrestling in the Lone Star State comes from the sports competitive nature as well as its impact on students’ personal development. Kody Tanimoto an All Saints Varsity wrestler who has committed to North Dakota University says, “It has made me a stronger, better person overall”.
Wrestlers are known for their discipline, resilience, and amazing work ethic, qualities that transcend the mat and contribute to the overall success and growth of student athletes. Wrestling in Texas has grown over 40% over the last ten years and programs continue to get bigger.
Ray Bedford, owner or Spartan Mat Club said, “I have seen my wrestling classes grow tremendously over the past two years, I would say they have tripled at least”.
As the wrestling mats continue to grow with competitors, the future of college wrestling in Texas appears to be more promising.
The growth of this beloved sport is not just a victory for athletes but also a celebration of the enduring spirit of wrestling that will continue to inspire the next generation of dedicated wrestlers.
