There are many good ping pong players at All Saints’, and the players take the sport extremely seriously. In our school, we have two tables that are usually constantly being used by great players. We have had these tables for two years and it has made many average players turn into great players.
Many people and students that got into ping pong have increased their game and now there are a handful of incredible players. The All Saints’ Upper School hosts an annual tournament that takes place before Thanksgiving Break, and had about 60 players registered in 2022.
This year in the Boy’s Division, Gavin Mears ‘24 won the championship. Last year’s champion, Clay Upchurch ’23 was defeated before the semi finals. The cool thing about this tournament is that the winner gets to hold on to the “gold” jacket until the next year’s tournament. When asked about who is the best player, Luke Smelley 23’ said, “Blake Johnson because not many people can keep up with the speed of his plays. All of his plays are powerful and extremely quick.” Smelley also said that, “Gavin Mears is also right up there because his serves are his bread and butter.”
To get another opinion, I asked Gavin Prellwitz who the best ping pong player is and he quickly responded by saying “Jake Milliken.” Prellwitz continued, “His defense is some of the best in the Upper School, and he returns everything back.” In conclusion, there are many fine players in the All Saints’ Upper School and each player has a specific specialty that makes them good.
